Betroffene Welpen weisen ein ungewöhnliches Fell (rau und lockig) sowie Symptome einer Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Binde-/Hornhautentzündung aufgrund mangelnder Tränenflüssigkeit) auf. Außerdem erscheinen betroffene Welpen kleiner als ihre Wurfgeschwister. Haarmangel sowie das raue Fell führen zu Kratzen.
